I’m Nirmal Baishnab, a Machine Learning Engineer and PhD candidate specializing in Computer and Mechanical Engineering. My research focuses on cutting-edge computer vision and generative models, from 3D microstructures to sports analytics. I’ve developed scalable frameworks, built efficient data pipelines, and contributed to impactful projects, including baseball umpire assist tools and microstructure generation using Latent Diffusion Models.
Outside of my professional life, I’m a semi-professional chess player striving towards becoming a professional, a devoted badminton enthusiast, and a regular at the gym. Whether it’s strategizing on the chessboard, smashing on the badminton court, or pushing limits at the gym, I’m always up for a challenge.

Officially one step closer to the PhD! 🎉 Excited to share that I have successfully completed my PhD preliminary exam! This journey has been filled with challenges, late nights, and countless simulations, but also with incredible learning and support from my advisors, colleagues, friends, and family. My research focuses on computational modeling for organic photovoltaics, particularly in advancing microstructure-property relationships through generative AI and high-performance computing. Looking forward to pushing the boundaries further as I move toward the final phase of my PhD!

Excited to wrap up my summer internship with a final presentation on the baseball umpire assist project! ⚾This summer, I had the opportunity to design and implement a validation pipeline that streamlined the process from video recording to annotation. I developed scripts and tools to capture game footage, store it in AWS, and automate the processing and annotation steps. It was an incredible experience to see the project come to life.A big thank you to my team and mentors for their support and guidance throughout this journey!

We were all graduate students in the Materials Science MSc program at Missouri State University, presenting our work at the Einhellig Interdisciplinary Forum. Today, each of us has taken our own path forward:
Rajan earned his PhD from RPI and now works at Corning Inc. I recently passed my PhD prelims in Computer Engineering at Iowa State. Sabila completed her PhD at NC State and is now a postdoc researcher. Zach earned his PhD and MS in Entrepreneurship at ASU and is leading innovation in solar tech.
Grateful to have shared this chapter with such brilliant minds—and forever thankful to Dr. Sakidja and MSU for helping launch our journeys.
